More than 20 research groups are active at the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics. The research projects span across a broad range of topics covering various aspects of structure and function of biological systems. A major fraction of these topics are centered on biological membranes, where many groups working within this area are part of the Center for Biomembrane Research, which is hosted by the department. Also the Stockholm Bioinformatics Centre and the Science for Life Laboratory are closely linked to the department. The combination of the highly interdisciplinary expertise and research projects at the department is unique in Sweden and also at an international level.

In advance of the program, aspiring MBA students can attend German courses at the Goethe Institute Berlin while getting to know Berlin. In addition, a weekly German course is offered during the MBA program. After graduation, alumni can also take advantage of the cooperation between ESMT and the Goethe Institute. Sixty per cent of ESMT alumni remain and work in Germany after graduation.

University of South Alabama provides Honors Scholarships for High School Graduates at the University in USA in the field of any subject. The University of South Alabama Honors Program offers a curriculum of interdisciplinary excellence designed to stimulate analytical and critical thinking of exceptionally qualified and highly motivated students. In this effort, the USA Honors Program challenges students with scholarly activities, creative activities, exposes them to cultural enrichment and requires them to engage in community service.

The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation provides scholarships up to $30,000 per year to approximately 60 deserving students selected annually. Each award is intended to cover a significant share of the student’s educational expenses – including tuition, living expenses, books and required fees – for the final two to three years necessary to achieve a bachelor’s degree.

Each year, six awards valued at £500 each will be made available to support full time undergraduates with the costs of an Independent Study Project (ISP). An ISP is a one unit value course assessed by a 10,000 word essay on an approved topic of the student’s choice and may be based on original fieldwork (aboard or in the UK), the critical analysis of documents and/or statistical materials, or may be an original synthesis of material derived from secondary sources. The research to be supported by this award must be conducted in the vacation – normally the summer vacation of the preceding year. These awards are not intended for independent study projects which form part of a language year abroad.

Government of Belgium, DGD provides Belgian Bilateral Master’s Scholarship for Young Professionals from Vietnam to study in Belgium in the field of subjects offered by the university. Within the framework of its cooperation programme with Vietnam, the government of Belgium wishes to support the government of Vietnam in its efforts to reduce poverty and achieve sustainable development. The Belgian Bilateral Scholarships (BBS) constitute an important component of this cooperation programme, which aims to contribute to the long-term growth and stability of Vietnam. Belgian Bilateral Scholarships, granted through the Directorate General for Development Cooperation (DGD) under the Federal Public Service of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation, enable young professionals from Vietnam to pursue Master studies in Belgium and gain new expertise for the benefit of their country. The programme is managed and implemented by the Belgian Embassy in Hanoi and the Belgian Development Agency (BTC).

The University of Virginia, Virginia Tech, Rolls-Royce, and the Commonwealth of Virginia have entered into an innovative strategic partnership to define the next generation of power systems for aerospace, energy, and marine applications. Examples of the partnership include the creation of the Commonwealth Center for Advanced Manufacturing and the Commonwealth Center for Aerospace Propulsion Systems, which are being developed jointly by the University of Virginia and Virginia Tech. Technical areas of interest include, but are not limited to: nextgeneration materials, coatings, and thin films; electrochemistry, including corrosion and high-temperature oxidation; propulsion; combustion; machine controls and mechatronics; computational fluid dynamics; energy storage; manufacturing systems; thermal management; mechanics; and multi-functional materials.

At this time (fall 2011) there is a concrete opening for a phd position in the context of a Marie-Curie network. The specific problem to be addressed is development and application of theoretical/computational methods aimed at describing two-photon absorption. This in turn touches on major fundamental issues in theoretical chemistry with potential applications to photoactive proteins. A significant part of the work with be hard core theory and program development.
