The EVIMalaR International PhD Programme on Biology and Pathology of the Malaria Parasite offers 11 PhD student fellowships. Deadline: 6 September, 2010. Training of the future EVIMalaR students is conducted through the virtual European Malaria Graduate School, which is organized and operated in collaboration with the EMBL and the Heidelberg University.
EVIMalaR is a collaborative research Network of Excellence, funded by the European Commission and coordinated by the University of Glasgow. It currently engages 49 Principal Investigators from 34 institutions in Europe (29) and malaria endemic countries (5). The consortium conducts research on malaria parasites and their interactions with both mammalian hosts and mosquito vectors. EVIMalaR’s International PhD Programme aims to train talented young scientists from both North and South in malaria research, with emphasis on interdisciplinary approaches. It thus offers a unique opportunity for students to become engaged in malaria research in world-leading malaria research institutions.
22 PhD positions are available within the EVIMalaR PhD Programme to be staffed in two calls. During this first call 11 fellowships have been given (funded for a maximum of 3.5 years), linked to collaborative research projects, each supervised by two Principal Investigators from different countries. Applicants should hold the necessary qualifications entitling them to undertake a PhD study in their host country, and should possess a high standard of written and spoken English.
Applications are to be submitted online via www.evimalar.org and are due by 6 September 2010.
Shortlisted candidates will be invited to EMBL, Heidelberg, on 3-5 December 2010, for interviews with the Admissions Committee. Successful candidates should be available to start in April 2010 to attend the 2-week PhD Core Course in Heidelberg.
Prof. Lanzer, Head of the Dept. of Parasitology, is also head of the EU-funded EVIMalaR International PhD Programme on Biology and Pathology of the Malaria Parasite.
